My name is Steve Ward. I'm the IT Director at the British Safety Council.
I've been with the council for a number of years now.
Currently doing some exciting projects around website
a lot of e-commerce work.
Hence the link with Umbraco and Ucommerce and
also doing some business capability work and process and business
redesign and reengineering
and then of course
systems
that need to be in place to support that.
I inherited quite a complex kind of monolithic website architecture
and where a kind of off the shelf product had been used but was kind of
extended and customized,
quite heavily customized to start to start to introduce
capabilities that it wasn't designed to introduce to have
I think there is always a risk with that because as you start to use
technologies and extend them and use them in
ways that they're not designed to be used.
You start to get into a bit of a mess and when you start getting upgrades
and you know new versions being released quite often you can find you know,
you can find yourself in trouble.
So we work closely with our partner Reading Room to
look at our digital architecture, look at our digital strategy
and it was pretty clear that kind of modular extendable off the shelf
best of breed approach is best.
So we we partnered with Umbraco as of course CMS
and then Ucommerce as our prettified preferred e-commerce solution
and for us it's about
finding the off the shelf solution designed to deliver your business need
and then using that software to its
advantage and making sure you use it,
how it was designed to be used. If you're going for
a one size fits all platform
or indeed you're trying to extend and customize the platform you that you have,
you do get more control
and you do lose the ability to in some circumstances to,
run your business the way you want to run your business,
your business because you can mold the technology to do whatever you want to do.
But as I alluded to just now that there are risks with that. So in one respect,
buying off the shelf best of breed,
you can lose a little bit of control of how you want to work
and you may have to adopt the way the system is designed to work.
But what you get is a tried and tested method
to deliver the capabilities that that you're looking for
and you don't get that cost of ownership associated with
every time that you want to move or change.
You've got to do extensive development work.
You can just swap out modules from your estate,
make sure you deliver your capabilities in the most cost effective way.
So our selection of Umbraco
it was a technology we've used in the past,
it's .net based, we're a Microsoft based organization further.
So the technology stack worked for us. With Umbraco you get the best of both
worlds.
I think it's open source,
it's free at point of use but what you've got sitting behind
that is an established company mechanism that
is continuing to develop the product,
support the product, upgrade the product.
So
the CMS wasn't so much of a difficult choice for us.
The e-commerce solution was the solution we were moving away from.
It was a true open source solution.
It was developed by a very small independent developer. Support for it ceased
when you started to look at the upgrade path for Umbracco.
It was soon apparent that our e-commerce solution
of one of the time didn't support it and
there was no news from the development house of how they were going to bring up to speed.
So we looked at a couple of solutions for e-commerce, Ucommerce being one of them.
I guess what cinched it for for me was a good price point.
I had a very, you know,
we mapped our business requirement to the capabilities of the platform
and there was a very very good match. With Ucommerce,
seeing the partnership between Ucommerce and Umbracco and there's a road map,
there are very definitive road maps from both
entities that show continued support throughout.
So it's so it's good to know that these technologies
are gonna be working together for the medium to long term
and the customer success program that Ucommerce
have kind of recently delivered.
I think it's a really, really good model,
giving direct support from the vendor to the end user,
bypassing technical um to make sure that
the customer can really leverage the product.
It becomes a much more useful and relevant product for the
customer and in terms serves the vendor,
because the more benefit the customer gets from the product,
the more sticky they become.
So it's a winner all around.
